Thoroughgood Neighborhood Guide

Thoroughgood is one of Virginia Beach's most quietly distinctive neighborhoods, shaped by its position along the Western Branch Lynnhaven River and Witchduck Bay, where waterfront access and mature tree canopy give the streets a character that newer parts of the city simply don't have. The neighborhood takes its name from Adam Thoroughgood, a 17th-century colonial figure whose preserved brick house still stands here as one of the oldest in the country, lending the area a sense of rootedness that residents take seriously. Ranch-style brick homes on generous lots define the housing stock, and a meaningful share of those lots either touch the water or sit close enough to it that boat ownership feels less like a hobby and more like a neighborhood norm. The location threads together well-regarded schools, a short drive to Town Center, and the kind of leafy suburban calm that doesn't require much selling. Flood-prone streets and aggressive summer mosquitoes come with the waterfront territory, but for families and long-timers drawn to history, space, and easy water access, those are familiar tradeoffs.
