Morgantown Climate Reality: Hills, humidity and real winters
Is it going to fog, drizzle, or maybe become something worse? In this neck of the woods, the summers are as muggy as a frat house basement, and the winters bite with a gray, windy chill. Here's what else is going on around Morgantown that will impact the time you spend outside.

Hannah, Our Local Expert Guiding Your Move
Hannah is a born and raised West Virginian who briefly tested life across state lines before realizing the pull of the hills is undefeated. She has lived in both northern and south central West Virginia, moved more times than she can count during college, and knows Charleston well enough to give directions using landmarks instead of street names. She writes fiction, spins yarn into sweaters, drinks Charleston coffee like its a personality trait, and somehow keeps four pets fed. Editing West Virginia guides comes naturally when you know the people shine... even when the sun does not.

What's the Weather Really Like in Morgantown?
The forecast, the fashion, and the fine print locals wish someone had told them sooner.
Summer temps be like
Surprise sauna sessions (mid-80s, feels like 90s)
Winter lows make you
Layer up or perish (teens to 20s on really cold days)
The humidity makes me
question the usefulness of every hair product I own
Unique weather patterns include
Four seasons in a week is completely normal here. That Appalachian mountain microclimate means you'll get surprise fog banks rolling through campus, random thunderstorms that appear out of nowhere, and the occasional snow squall in April just to keep you on your toes.
Local weather fashion tip
Layers are your go-to now. Keep a hoodie in your car year-round, and accept that you'll never guess the weather correctly, no matter how hard you try!
You know it's time to get out of town when
It's the third gray February week in a row, and everyone's booking flights to literally anywhere tropical
Bugs be like
Mosquitoes own the summer evenings, and those tiny gnats near the river think your face is a landing strip when you go for a bike ride.
You're stuck indoors again today because
The freezing rain has transformed every hill into an ice luge (good luck driving any street in Sunnyside!)
Green thumb enthusiasts love
The growing season that actually cooperates. Rich soil, decent rainfall, and you can grow backyard heirloom tomatoes that make you feel like a homesteading champion from late May through September.
My Favorite Season in Morgantown
My favorite season in Morgantown is fall - particularly the beginning of fall when you still feel the warmth of summer, but the trees are beginning to change. At this point in the year, it's not super rainy, the sun still shines, and you can feel the weather starting to change. It's mild and comfortable enough to sit outside and read a book.
