Driving and Transit in Morgantown
Commutes, congestion, transit, and parking: what getting around Morgantown really takes.

Hannah, Our Local Expert Guiding Your Move
Hannah is a born and raised West Virginian who briefly tested life across state lines before realizing the pull of the hills is undefeated. She has lived in both northern and south central West Virginia, moved more times than she can count during college, and knows Charleston well enough to give directions using landmarks instead of street names. She writes fiction, spins yarn into sweaters, drinks Charleston coffee like its a personality trait, and somehow keeps four pets fed. Editing West Virginia guides comes naturally when you know the people shine... even when the sun does not.

How Do You Get Around Morgantown?
Commutes, congestion, transit, and parking: the daily logistics nobody puts on the listing.
The time I spend getting to/from work every day is
roughly 12 minutes, unless you get caught at a campus crosswalk between classes
Traffic congestion areas to avoid
University Avenue during anything involving WVU athletics or classes
Ability to get around without a car
Theoretically, it's possible if you rely on the PRT and local buses, but if you plan to walk or commute by bike, those WV hills will humble you really fast
Locals dream of driving around in a
lifted truck with WVU flags sticking out of the windows, naturally
The reality is that most locals drive
rusted Subarus that have seen too many Appalachian winters, modest sedans, SUVs in the suburbs
Quirky local driving habit
treating every red light like a suggestion, making questionable moves to get through intersections on game days
The likelihood of finding parking
depends on whether or not 60,000 students remembered where they long-term parked their cars last semester
#1 driving tip
Master parallel parking immediatley (even better if you can manage it on a hill)
Where I Go for a Quiet Escape
Morgantown can become a hectic place very quickly, especially in the fall when students arrive on campus. But one place you can always escape to, as long as the weather isn't terrible, is Dorsey's Knob Park. There, you can take in scenic views from the highest point in Morgantown.
