West Side Neighborhood Guide

West Side sits along the Kanawha River between downtown Charleston and South Charleston, anchored by the grassy peninsula of Magic Island and framed by the Patrick Street Bridge to the east. The neighborhood has a lived-in, creative character shaped in part by the murals and independent businesses of the Elk City corridor, which give it a distinct identity among Charleston's riverfront communities. Residents tend to be rooted here by affordable housing, an easy commute in both directions along Kanawha Boulevard, and a genuine sense of local pride. The tradeoffs are real but familiar: the low rumble of I-64 and late-night freight trains are part of the ambient soundtrack.
