Getting Around Richmond: Tunnels, bridges and military traffic
Commutes, congestion, transit, and parking: what getting around Richmond really takes.

Laura, Our Local Expert Guiding Your Move
Laura arrived in Virginia in 1988 with a teaching job, a love of sunshine, and zero idea she’d still be here decades later—now basically an honorary ambassador for the state. She’s tracked down over 800 of Virginia’s iconic LOVE signs, a feat that probably deserves its own license plate. When she’s not at the beach or debating which El Azteca location does the best Nacho Fajitas, she’s editing Snappy Scout’s Virginia guides, helping readers discover the local quirks and hidden gems she’s been living (and loving) for years.

How Do You Get Around Richmond?
Commutes, congestion, transit, and parking: the daily logistics nobody puts on the listing.
The time I spend getting to/from work every day is
shockingly reasonable, like 15 minutes tops, unless there is construction on I-95
Traffic congestion areas to avoid
I-95 near Broad Street during literally any hour, I-95 and I-64 Interchange during morning and afternoon rush hours
Ability to get around without a car
Technically possible in the Fan, but you'll miss out on 90% of the best tacos and dive bars scattered across town. GRTC buses are available if you must
Locals dream of driving around in a
vintage Subaru Outback covered in brewery stickers
The reality is that most locals drive
a slightly dented Honda Accord or a Toyota Camry with expired registration
Quirky local driving habit
treating yellow lights as aggressive suggestions to floor it and exiting the interstate from three lanes over
The likelihood of finding parking
decent everywhere except Carytown on a Saturday afternoon
#1 driving tip
the Boulevard is always faster than you think
Where I Go for a Quiet Escape
Richmond is home to 7 LOVEwork signs. When I need a bit of LOVE, I head to one of the signs and do a photo shoot. Find the sign in front of the Richmond Raceway, in the Main Street Station, at the J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College, Reservoir Distillery, and on the first floor of Regency Square Mall.
