River Arts District Neighborhood Guide

The River Arts District is Asheville's most creatively charged neighborhood, built along the western bank of the French Broad River in a stretch of converted warehouses and rail yards that have been steadily claimed by painters, sculptors, brewers, and makers over the past few decades. Studios line the old industrial buildings, many of them open to visitors, and the neighborhood's murals have turned everyday walls into a rolling open-air gallery. The Wedge Brewing anchors the social scene, 12 Bones Smokehouse draws loyal crowds for its ribs, and the greenway along the river gives residents a quick escape from the buzz. It's a neighborhood that rewards people who paint, pedal, and explore on foot, though weekend crowds, train horns, and scarce parking are part of the bargain. Bounded by the French Broad to the west, I-240 to the north, Clingman Avenue to the east, and the Norfolk Southern tracks to the south, RAD sits close to South Slope and downtown while holding onto its own gritty, colorful identity.
