Commutes, congestion, transit, and parking: what getting around Plainfield really takes.

Hannah has spent her entire life in Illinois, learning early that the state is equal parts cornfields, quiet downtowns, and people claiming Chicago when they're really living a life in the burbs. She loves Mauve Cocktail Lounge treats, small town downtowns, travel books (she's been voraciously reading them since elementary school), ice cream at the OG Dairy Queen, and correcting grammar just for fun. At Snappy Scout, Hannah edits Illinois moving guides with decades of relocation experience, old soul wisdom, and just enough youthful energy to keep it practical.

How Do You Get Around Plainfield?
Commutes, congestion, transit, and parking: the daily logistics nobody puts on the listing.
The time I spend getting to/from work every day is
longer than I’d like thanks to Route 59, especially when everyone decides to leave at the exact same minute.
Traffic congestion areas to avoid
Route 59 and 126th Street during rush hour will test your patience, especially near the intersections by Walmart, Target, and the Shops at Renwick, plus any school drop-off zones on Plainfield roads where every parent seems to hit the gas at the same time.
Ability to get around without a car
About as practical as swimming to work. You need a car in Plainfield.
Locals dream of driving around in a
loaded Lexus GX 550 to haul the kids, sports gear, and every soccer parent’s emotional baggage.
The reality is that most locals drive
A Jeep Grand Cherokee or Kia Telluride packed with cleats, sports bags, and an endless stash of granola bars.
Quirky local driving habit
Treating every four-way stop as a suggestion, because apparently yielding is optional.
The likelihood of finding parking
Plentiful pretty much everywhere except the Starbucks drive-thru at 7:15 AM, which is basically a national sport.
#1 driving tip
Budget extra time for the endless stoplights along Route 59 and embrace the zen of sitting in traffic.
Where I Go for a Quiet Escape
Most people think of Lockport St. when they picture downtown Plainfield - this is the "main road" of downtown. Rather than grabbing my coffee and walking Lockport St. - where you're 90% likely to bump shoulders with somebody regardless of the time or day - I go just south of the Village Green Park (the park on Ottawa and Des Plaines) and walk the streets south of downtown but just north of the high school. The homes are so charming, the trees are mature and provide great shade, and even though you're "downtown," you're relatively removed from the hustle and noise.
