Oread Neighborhood Guide
Oread sits on the hill just west of the University of Kansas campus, rising from Jayhawk Boulevard toward Mississippi Street between 11th and 15th Streets, and its identity is inseparable from the institution it overlooks. Historic homes line streets steep enough to make flat-landers nervous, and many of them look directly down on Memorial Stadium, which makes game days less of an inconvenience and more of a spectator sport from your own front porch. The neighborhood draws a mix of longtime Lawrence residents, faculty, and KU alumni who never found a compelling reason to leave, all of whom have made peace with the fact that a car is largely useless here on football Saturdays. What residents get in return is genuine walkability to Allen Fieldhouse, the main campus, and Massachusetts Street, along with some of the better elevated views in the city.
