Old North Columbus Neighborhood Guide

Old North Columbus runs along High Street just north of campus, a corridor of dive bars, thrift stores, and house shows that has absorbed decades of Ohio State overflow without losing its particular scruffy identity. The neighborhood is defined as much by its rhythms as its geography: bikes locked to porch rails, indie bands in basements, and a reliable late-night pilgrimage to Hounddog's Pizza, a campus institution that stays open until 3am. Big porches on walkable blocks make it genuinely livable, drawing a mix of grad students, bartenders, and longtime residents who have figured out how to coexist with game-day gridlock and permit-zone parking. The Glen Echo Ravine and the Olentangy River form natural edges to the north and west, giving the neighborhood real boundaries, though on High Street itself the energy is unambiguously urban and a little worn in the best way.

Hounddog’s, Porches, Indie Noise

🧭Bordered by: Lane Avenue south, Glen Echo Ravine north, Olentangy River west, the rail line and I-71 corridor east, with High Street cutting straight through

📌Best known for: basement shows (indie bands play house shows constantly), Hounddog's, thrift gold, bikes, everyone rides, parking is impossible

👕The neighborhood stereotype is: cardiganed grad students and tattooed bartenders working at High Street bars

👍Move here for: cheap big porches and walkable High Street

👎Be prepared for: game day gridlock, midnight trains, parking gymnastics due to permit zones and no driveways

TLDR;: scruffy charm, students, slices, bikes, OSU overflow housing with dive bar energy
