North Johnson City Neighborhood Guide

North Johnson City is the city's most recognizable suburban corridor, stretching north of State of Franklin Road toward the Sullivan County line and anchored by Science Hill High School, the Johnson City Mall, and the dense commercial strip along North Roan Street. The area is a patchwork of newer subdivisions with actual yards and older, more established homes that hint at how the city grew outward over decades. Families make up the backbone of the neighborhood, drawn by the proximity to schools, youth sports infrastructure, and the kind of everyday convenience that comes with having groceries, chain restaurants, and a movie theater within a few minutes of home. The tradeoff is real: North Roan can bottleneck quickly, especially around school events, and the suburban layout means you are navigating a lot of it by car. What softens the sprawl are the mountain views that remind you this is still East Tennessee.
