Relocating from Ohio to Colorado: Why So Many People Are Doing It

Trading the rolling hills of the Midwest for the Rocky Mountain skyline is an exciting prospect, but the differences between Ohio and Colorado run deeper than elevation. Ohio offers a slower, more affordable pace of life with dense suburban communities and four mild seasons, while Colorado brings outdoor adventure, a booming job market, and a cost of living that tends to catch newcomers off guard. The cultural shift alone, from Buckeye tailgates to ski weekends, can take some getting used to. Our Snappy Scout team (Heather & Heidi) broke down the costs, logistics, and lifestyle changes you should expect before packing the first box.

Local Perspective

What moment, smell, or ritual captures the soul of Colorado?

It’s the first breath when I get back from traveling. Colorado air is thin and dry, but it somehow feels lighter and cleaner. Everywhere else feels heavier, and coming home makes it feel easier to breathe again.

Eating Like a Local in Ohio

if you want to eat like a real Buckeye, you gotta get Cincinnati chili the right way. It’s this weird, thin, spiced-up meat sauce (cinnamon and allspice vibes, no beans in the base) served over spaghetti. Don’t call it “chili” like Texas stuff, we know it’s different. Tips on ordering it: 3-way: Spaghetti + chili + a mountain of shredded cheddar cheese.
4-way: Add onions or beans.
5-way: All of it, cheese, onions, and beans.

Always ask for oyster crackers on the side and hit it with hot sauce. And whatever you do, don’t put beans on first if you’re ordering a 4-way, locals will side-eye you hard.

Eating Like a Local in Colorado

Order cautiously: Rocky Mountain Oysters are NOT oysters. They’re bull testicles. But they’re deep-fried, and let’s be honest, anything deep-fried has a fighting chance.

A Local's Take on the Seasons in Ohio and CO

SUMMER
Ohio

cornfield sauna vibes (sticky 90s in Cincinnati, lake breeze up north). Though Cleveland can hit 85 and feel like 95 with the humidity rolling off the lake

Colorado

crispy mornings, scorching afternoons (90s on the Front Range)

WINTER
Ohio

gray hoodie chill (Snowbelt gets lake effect wallops, southern Ohio mostly slush). Chardon and Ashtabula regularly bury under feet while Columbus gets a dusting

Colorado

bluebird perfection interrupted by arctic blasts (mountains stay frozen)

My Favorite Thing About Winter/Spring/Summer/Fall in Colorado

The transition from summer to fall is one of my favorite times of year. The leaves turn, the air cools just enough, and driving through the mountains for leaf peeping feels like a warm, cozy hug before winter settles in.
