From Ohio to Alaska: What Google Won't Tell You

Trading the Midwest for the Last Frontier is one of the boldest relocation decisions a person can make, and the contrast between Ohio and Alaska goes far beyond the miles separating them. Ohio offers affordable cities, familiar seasons, and a dense network of highways that keep everything within easy driving distance. Alaska replaces all of that with untamed wilderness, extreme winters, and a sense of isolation that is equal parts freeing and humbling. The cost of living, the logistics of getting there, and the daily rhythms of life shift dramatically once you cross into a state that does not even share a border with the contiguous United States. Our Snappy Scout team (Heather & Mackenzie) dug into everything from shipping your belongings across thousands of miles to understanding how Alaskans actually manage the long dark winters, so you can make this monumental move with confidence rather than guesswork.

Ohio Food vs AK Food: The Real Difference

Eating Like a Local in Ohio

if you want to eat like a real Buckeye, you gotta get Cincinnati chili the right way. It’s this weird, thin, spiced-up meat sauce (cinnamon and allspice vibes, no beans in the base) served over spaghetti. Don’t call it “chili” like Texas stuff, we know it’s different. Tips on ordering it: 3-way: Spaghetti + chili + a mountain of shredded cheddar cheese.
4-way: Add onions or beans.
5-way: All of it, cheese, onions, and beans.

Always ask for oyster crackers on the side and hit it with hot sauce. And whatever you do, don’t put beans on first if you’re ordering a 4-way, locals will side-eye you hard.

What a Ohio Local and a AK Local Know About the Weather

SUMMER
Ohio

cornfield sauna vibes (sticky 90s in Cincinnati, lake breeze up north). Though Cleveland can hit 85 and feel like 95 with the humidity rolling off the lake

Alaska

Can be shockingly pleasant sweater weather (mostly 60s, sometimes 70s-80s inland)

WINTER
Ohio

gray hoodie chill (Snowbelt gets lake effect wallops, southern Ohio mostly slush). Chardon and Ashtabula regularly bury under feet while Columbus gets a dusting

Alaska

Frostbite mode (Interior hits minus 40, Coasts are windy and rainy mild). Dark!

My Favorite Thing About Winter/Spring/Summer/Fall in Alaska

I love the transition of trading in my packraft paddles, fishing gear, camping equipment, and mountain bike for backcountry skis, ice climbing tools, ice skates, and a local library card!
