Moving to Idaho from NY: Is This Move Right for Your Personality?

Trading the relentless pace of New York for the wide open landscapes of Idaho is a move that sounds like a breath of fresh air, and for most people, it genuinely is. Still, the contrast between these two states runs much deeper than swapping skyscrapers for mountain ranges. New York keeps you wired into a dense, fast moving world of transit, culture, and career opportunity, while Idaho offers something quieter and more spread out, where the nearest neighbor might be miles away and a traffic jam involves a tractor. Our Snappy Scout team (Alexa & Chandi) dug into the real costs, moving logistics, and lifestyle adjustments you should think through before you start loading the truck.

Local Perspective

What moment, smell, or ritual captures the soul of Idaho?

Ashton and Island Park area are where I call home. I know I'm here when I smell the fresh pines. In the Idaho Falls area, it's sage after a rain storm. And my pre-hike ritual always ends with grabbing bear spray on my way out the door.

Eating Like a Local in New York

BECSPK is a Sunday ritual. Also, half and half is not something you put in your coffee - it's half iced tea, half lemonade, and it's basically mandatory for a beach day.

Eating Like a Local in Idaho

Many restaurants have Navajo tacos on the menu. It's a Western favorite and there's nothing special to ordering it — though you should ask what the spice level is if you're sensitive to that.

Swapping New York Winters for Idaho: What to Know

SUMMER
New York

subway sauna chic (sticky in NYC, kinder in the Adirondacks)

Idaho

High desert broiler mode (triple digits in Treasure Valley, breezy at the lakes up north).

WINTER
New York

parka plus sass required (lake effect buries Buffalo, slush auditions in Manhattan)

Idaho

Icebox roulette vibe (Idaho Falls and Rexburg bitter cold, Boise inversion gloom, Panhandle snow globe).

My Favorite Thing About Winter/Spring/Summer/Fall in Idaho

WINTER — the views. The fresh snow covers everything and makes it feel magical. During particularly cold nights, I love to go outside and shine my flashlight on the trees and rocks. The whole world is covered in fairy dust.

SPRING — the crocus. They push up through the snow and offer color to the slushy.

SUMMER — the weather! It's perfect and beautiful.

FALL — bottling my harvest for the year. Fresh jams, peaches, salsa, and everything else! Also hunting. I love having a freezer full of elk.
