Your Kansas to FL Relocation Guide: Which Type of Person Actually Thrives

Trading the sweeping prairies and landlocked calm of Kansas for the sun-soaked coastlines of Florida is a bigger lifestyle leap than most people anticipate. The Sunflower State runs on wide open space, four distinct seasons, and a slower, grounded pace of living, while Florida operates on beach access, year-round warmth, and a humidity level that takes some serious getting used to. Both states skip the income tax burden, so your wallet may feel similarly comfortable, but the day to day rhythm of life tells a very different story. Our Snappy Scout team (Jackie & Vanessa) dug into the costs, logistics, and lifestyle adjustments you should plan for before you load up that moving truck headed south.

Local Perspective

What moment, smell, or ritual captures the soul of Florida?

All the festivals and outdoor events! That's why I moved here. I wanted to get outside more, and this state caters to that perfectly. No matter what city you're in, rest assured every weekend there is some big market, festival, event, sports club, or other attraction happening somewhere near you (or a short-ish drive away), all year long.

From KS to FL: How Your Plate Shifts

Eating Like a Local in Kansas

Barbecue is the word, specifically burnt ends. One joint in particular, Gates Barbecue, with locations on both the Kansas and Missouri side, has a unique approach. The literal second you walk through the door, you are expected to order, and they aren't shy (or quiet) if you take too long. The ordering process alone has scared away many an outsider.

Eating Like a Local in Florida

This really varies by where in Florida you are. But, generally, Cuban and Latin-inspired food here is very popular, as well as what I refer to as "beach bar food:" coconut shrimp, grouper bites, crab cakes, gator bites, fish tacos, and of course, margaritas (especially spicy ones with a Tajin rim).

I don't think there are any unspoken rules here, per se, except that you always want to get the freshest fish available, such as mahi mahi or grouper, and skip the conventional white fish.
