Moving from Hawaii to MS: Was It Worth It?

Trading island life for the Deep South is one of the more dramatic relocations a person can make, and the contrasts between Hawaii and Mississippi run far deeper than the miles of open ocean separating them. Hawaii wraps you in volcanic landscapes, Pacific breezes, and a cost of living that quietly drains even healthy bank accounts, while Mississippi offers flat delta land, Southern hospitality, and some of the most affordable housing prices in the entire country. The culture shock, the climate adjustment, and the sheer logistics of shipping your belongings across the Pacific all deserve serious attention before you commit to this move. Our Snappy Scout team (Matt & Katherine) dug into the real costs, the moving logistics, and the day to day lifestyle shifts you should plan for before you pack your first box and say aloha to the islands.

How the Dining Scene Looks Different When You Move from HI to MS

Eating Like a Local in Hawaii

For a classic plate lunch, try chicken katsu with mac salad and two scoops of rice. The best traditional Hawaiian grinds include poi, laulau, lomi salmon, pipikaula, and squid luau. Finally, nothing beats an ahi limu poke bowl for a quick lunch—don't forget the furikake.

Eating Like a Local in Mississippi

When you're in Mississippi, it's essential that you "get in a pinch" and suck some guts out of a crawfish at least once. Wear a shirt you can get messy, and don't even think about donning one of those plastic bibs--the locals will definitely lose respect for you.

My Favorite Thing About Winter/Spring/Summer/Fall in Mississippi

My favorite season in Mississippi is Mardi Gras season! Starting on the Eve of Epiphany, or the 12th day of Christmas, the Mardi Gras season is filled with parades, fancy balls, and every flavor of king cake you could imagine (and whoever gets the baby has to buy the next king cake). This isn't New Orleans Mardi Gras, it's fun--and appropriate--for the whole family.
