Leaving Florida for Colorado: The Cultural Shift That Catches People Off Guard

Trading white sand beaches and year-round heat for mountain peaks and four distinct seasons is a bigger leap than most Florida residents anticipate. The two states share a few surface-level similarities, like no state income tax, but the climate, terrain, and daily routines could not be more different. Florida life revolves around coastal access, flat landscapes, and surviving brutal humidity, while Colorado rewards those who embrace altitude, outdoor adventure, and genuinely cold winters. Our Snappy Scout team (Vanessa & Heidi) broke down the costs, logistics, and lifestyle adjustments you should plan for before loading the moving truck.

Local Perspective

What moment, smell, or ritual captures the soul of Colorado?

It’s the first breath when I get back from traveling. Colorado air is thin and dry, but it somehow feels lighter and cleaner. Everywhere else feels heavier, and coming home makes it feel easier to breathe again.

The Unspoken Eating Rules in FL and CO

Eating Like a Local in Florida

This really varies by where in Florida you are. But, generally, Cuban and Latin-inspired food here is very popular, as well as what I refer to as "beach bar food:" coconut shrimp, grouper bites, crab cakes, gator bites, fish tacos, and of course, margaritas (especially spicy ones with a Tajin rim).

I don't think there are any unspoken rules here, per se, except that you always want to get the freshest fish available, such as mahi mahi or grouper, and skip the conventional white fish.

Order cautiously: Rocky Mountain Oysters are NOT oysters. They’re bull testicles. But they’re deep-fried, and let’s be honest, anything deep-fried has a fighting chance.

My Favorite Thing About Winter/Spring/Summer/Fall in Colorado

The transition from summer to fall is one of my favorite times of year. The leaves turn, the air cools just enough, and driving through the mountains for leaf peeping feels like a warm, cozy hug before winter settles in.
