Moving to Florida from CA: How Life Changes After the Move

Trading Pacific sunsets for Atlantic coastlines might sound like a fair swap, but relocating from California to Florida brings more surprises than most people expect. California spoils residents with mild temperatures and mountain to beach variety, while Florida counters with year round warmth, relentless humidity, and a cost of living that looks appealing on paper until hurricane season arrives. Our Snappy Scout team (Jessica & Vanessa) dug into the real costs, logistics, and lifestyle shifts you need to know before loading up that moving truck.

Local Perspective

What moment, smell, or ritual captures the soul of Florida?

All the festivals and outdoor events! That's why I moved here. I wanted to get outside more, and this state caters to that perfectly. No matter what city you're in, rest assured every weekend there is some big market, festival, event, sports club, or other attraction happening somewhere near you (or a short-ish drive away), all year long.

The Local Food Culture Between California and Florida

Eating Like a Local in California

You can start the morning with an iced oat latte, grab an double-double with animal style fries (cheese, onions, and special sauce) from In-and-Out for lunch, and end with street dogs after a show. Also know as danger dogs, these bun-wrapped meals are topped with grilled onions and bell peppers. You can find the vendors outside of clubs/ bars on the weekends or by the dozens in concert parking lots. Why waste time driving when dinner is right in front of you?

Eating Like a Local in Florida

This really varies by where in Florida you are. But, generally, Cuban and Latin-inspired food here is very popular, as well as what I refer to as "beach bar food:" coconut shrimp, grouper bites, crab cakes, gator bites, fish tacos, and of course, margaritas (especially spicy ones with a Tajin rim).

I don't think there are any unspoken rules here, per se, except that you always want to get the freshest fish available, such as mahi mahi or grouper, and skip the conventional white fish.
