Montford Historic District Neighborhood Guide

Montford Historic District is one of Asheville's oldest and most architecturally intact neighborhoods, a walkable grid of Victorian and Queen Anne homes where wraparound porches and tree-canopied streets define the rhythm of daily life. The neighborhood is home to Riverside Cemetery, the resting place of Thomas Wolfe and O. Henry, which gives Montford a literary gravity that matches its Gothic aesthetic. Residents here take their porch time seriously, and the sidewalks are active enough that simply stepping outside tends to become a social event. The neighborhood sits just north of downtown, bounded by I-240 to the south and the French Broad River to the west, which means easy access to the city core alongside a persistent highway hum that comes with that convenience. The concentration of short-term rentals has reshaped parts of the housing stock, but the bones of the neighborhood, its pocket parks, historic architecture, and deeply bookish character, remain very much intact.
