Mill District (Bates Mill/Canal District) Neighborhood Guide

The Mill District, anchored by the massive Bates Mill complex along the Lower Canal, is Lewiston's most tangible link between its 19th-century industrial past and a slowly emerging creative economy. Repurposed mill space now houses startups and studios, brick loft apartments draw renters who want character over polish, and Baxter Brewing Company has made the neighborhood a genuine destination for beer lovers across Maine. The Androscoggin River runs along the western edge, where the riverwalk and Simard Payne Memorial Park offer some of the most rewarding walking in the city, especially during the Great Falls Balloon Festival when the whole district fills with visitors. Parking is tight and event weekends can clog the streets, but for people who want walkable downtown access, lower rents, and a neighborhood that still feels like it has something to prove, the Mill District is hard to dismiss.
