Makaha Neighborhood Guide
Makaha sits on Oahu's rugged west shore, northwest of Waianae where the Waianae Range meets the ocean and the crowds thin out considerably. The neighborhood is best known for its powerful winter surf, a break that has been testing serious wave riders since the early days of big-wave surfing and still draws those willing to earn their sets. Life here runs on a slower, saltier rhythm: afternoons are hot, the single road in and out can test your patience, and nightlife is essentially nonexistent, but the sunsets over the open Pacific are among the best on the island. Rent is more accessible than in Honolulu, and the community has a fiercely local character that rewards respect and staying awhile.
