Journal Square Neighborhood Guide

Journal Square is one of Jersey City's most culturally layered neighborhoods, built around the transit hub that has made it a practical alternative to Downtown for PATH commuters who want more city for their money. The commercial strips along Newark Avenue and Journal Square proper pulse with an almost encyclopedic range of global cuisines, anchored by the spice shops and restaurants of India Square to the west, and the neighborhood still carries the faded grandeur of the Loews Jersey Theatre, one of the great surviving movie palaces of the region. The residents tend to be a mix of longtime immigrants, college students from nearby St. Peter's University, and a growing wave of artists and young professionals drawn by relative affordability and a food scene that quietly punches above its weight. It is a neighborhood where a car is a liability rather than an asset, parking is genuinely contested territory, and the tradeoff for lower rents is a daily life that rewards those willing to walk, explore, and eat well.
