The Kauai Commute Guide: H-1 reality and coastal crawl
Commutes, congestion, transit, and parking: what getting around Kauai really takes.

Matt, Our Local Expert Guiding Your Move
Matt was born and raised on Oahu and currently makes the North Shore playground his home. He has lived in four states, half a dozen countries, and more houses across Oahu than he can remember. Each move requires relocating something like 40 surf, foil, and paddle boards and the sobering realization that they all have to fit somewhere. He is an adventure journalist, backcountry snowboarder, rock climber, mountain biker, and relentless swell tracker who loves scouting out obscure waves in far-flung corners of the world. Favorite constants include swell checks, tide charts, and vegan sushi at Tane. At Snappy Scout, Matt edits Hawaii guides with saltwater honesty and local precision.

How Do You Get Around Kauai?
Commutes, congestion, transit, and parking: the daily logistics nobody puts on the listing.
The time I spend getting to/from work every day is
12 minutes, unless there are six chickens blocking Kuhio Highway.
Traffic congestion areas to avoid include
Kuhio Highway during cruise ship days and literally any sunset.
Ability to get around without a car?
Technically possible, if you enjoy hitchhiking with barefoot strangers and waiting hours for a bus that may or may not show up.
Locals dream of driving around in a
lifted 4x4 Tacoma with rust as a badge of honor.
The reality is that most locals drive
beat-up Honda Civics held together by duct tape and salt air.
Quirky local driving habit?
The shaka wave replaces all turn signals.
The likelihood of finding parking?
Excellent everywhere—except at literally every single beach you want to visit.
#1 driving tip?
One-lane bridges require patience, aloha spirit, and decent brakes.
Where I Go for a Quiet Escape
Hanakapi'ai Beach is a beautiful sandy cove tucked along the Kalalau Trail on the north shore's Na Pali Coast. The steep, rugged two-mile hike filters out all but the toughest Instagram selfie seekers, meaning it's entirely possible to snag some solitude at this lovely beach, despite the fact that it's far from a secret.
