Dorchester Neighborhood Guide
Dorchester is Boston's largest neighborhood, stretching from the harbor west toward Mattapan and south to the Neponset River, and it holds more of the city's actual residential life than most visitors ever see. The neighborhood is defined by its triple-deckers, its genuinely diverse communities, and a food scene anchored by some of the best Vietnamese banh mi and Viet-Cajun spots in New England. People come for the space and relative affordability compared to the neighborhoods closer to downtown, and they stay because Dorchester still has the kind of block-level identity that most of Boston has long since traded away. The tradeoff is a commute that can be frustrating for anyone working on the western side of the city, but for those whose jobs keep them near the Red Line or the waterfront, it rarely comes up as a dealbreaker.
