Getting Around Chattanooga: Growing traffic and bypass reality
Commutes, congestion, transit, and parking: what getting around Chattanooga really takes.

Mike, Our Local Expert Guiding Your Move
Michael is a Tennessee native who has lived, worked, or worn out tires in all three divisions of the state, from Memphis to Nashville to Johnson City, plus plenty of small towns that never make postcards. He once moved from the far northeast corner of Tennessee to the far southwest for college, stayed twenty years, then somehow boomeranged right back to Appalachia. He knows the difference between mountain quiet and river loud, will defend Memphis BBQ like its a birthright, and can point you to everything from out of the way eateries to where locals actually hunt. We are not all barefoot moonshiners, but yes, some of us know where the real stuff is. At Snappy Scout Michael uses that deep statewide mileage to refine Tennessee moving guides so they're as real as a proper BBQ smoke ring, not some oven baked liquid smoke waste of calories.

How Do You Get Around Chattanooga?
Commutes, congestion, transit, and parking: the daily logistics nobody puts on the listing.
The time I spend getting to/from work every day is
a breezy 15 minutes, unless a storied "Choo-Choo" appears (oh yes, they're still around).
Traffic congestion areas to avoid
I-24 at rush hour, aka the Volkswagen plant shift change, but also be aware of bottlenecks at the I-24/I-75 split, the Ridge Cut, and the I-24/US 27 interchange.
Ability to get around without a car
Technically possible if you enjoy uphill hikes and optimistic bus schedules.
Locals dream of driving around in a
Subaru Outback filled with climbing gear and with kayaks permanently strapped to the roof.
The reality is that most locals drive
a slightly dusty Honda CR-V with EPB parking stickers.
Quirky local driving habit
Waving at cyclists like we all know each other.
The likelihood of finding parking
Surprisingly decent downtown, especially if you can parallel park and like to bike the Riverwalk.
#1 driving tip
Learn which railroad crossings add 20 minutes to everything.
Where I Go for a Quiet Escape
Stringers Ridge Park is hidden just minutes from downtown, and is where I go to get lost in the woods without leaving city limits. The 92-acre forest offers twisting trails and skyline views, but most of all, it offers a welcome break from concrete. Although once slated for demolition, local groups rescued it. The park is my favorite quiet walk zone with free access.
