Broadway (Historic District/Broadway Corridor) Neighborhood Guide

Broadway is Bangor's most architecturally distinguished residential corridor, a leafy stretch connecting City Hall to St. Joseph Hospital where Greek Revival and Victorian-era mansions built by 19th-century timber barons line the boulevard in remarkable concentration. The neighborhood is loosely bounded by State Street and the Kenduskeag Stream to the south, Park Street to the west, and Garland Street near the Thomas Hill Standpipe to the north, giving it a defined and walkable character that residents take genuine pride in. Fall foliage season here is something else entirely, with canopied streets that draw as much admiration as any dedicated leaf-peeping destination in the state. The mix of longtime homeowners, hospital workers, and university-adjacent professionals gives Broadway a civic energy that shows up in block associations, parade turnout, and the kind of neighborly street life that older Maine cities do quietly well. Winter brings the usual price of admission in the form of serious plow berms, but most people who live here have already decided the tradeoff is worth it.
